The simple things – a haphazard post

This might sound like a bit of a vent but I would like to put my thoughts out to my online diary. Of course, I am grateful to be able to live aĀ busy life with a solid path mapped out in my university career etc but when it overtakes the simple pleasures you can realise how much you take for granted.

Lately, my lifeĀ has been cluttered with commitments. Be those university commitments, dancing commitments, family commitments or generally life tasking me. I tend to be an organised person and usually I am on top of my diary, using it simply as a back up and knowing most of my dates in my head already but recently, my diary has been a massive safety net as I struggle to remember even what day it is nevermind what I have to do in that day with the workload I’m currently under.

I would say I am a little bit stressed which is unusual for me this early on in the year.

Although there are many places I can feel relaxed, I’ve learned that the two places I feel truly at peace are the shower or sauna. I love being alone sometimes and these places allow me quiet and ambience where I needĀ not think about anything at all, and personally I think it is nice to have empty thoughts every once in a while. My last few times in these places, I’ve been unable to relax with subject topics ranging fromĀ molecular formulas and equations running through my mind for upcoming chemistry exams or mentally dancing to remember choreographies and scattered, incomplete diary information which I wish I could remember. Ā I’m trying to power through these last few weeks of uni for some of the heavy workload to be lifted and so I can be reunited with peace and relaxation and quiet thoughts that I am missing so very much. For me, it is easy to take for granted in busy times things that make meĀ happy such as going to the sauna and not having any cares but I am determined to always make time for myself no matter how busy I may be. Whether crowded thoughts haunt my head or not, I still have to take an hour out of my week to at least try relaxingĀ and this is my favourite way to do so. I am oprimisticĀ that things will perk up again in a few weeks. Until then, I will remain sleep deprived and thought clustered.


This post was written quite haphazardly but I feel better for putting my thoughts to words.




March – Personal Goals

This year I have been lucky enough to be granted new opportunities that haveĀ allowed me to explore new avenues. One of the bestĀ things I have been working on this year is teacher training for dancing. Through this I’ve been asked to set myself goals each week for what I hope to improve on and achieve and actually putting these on paper has made me work harder to reach them.

I doĀ consistently have goals for myself but I never really set to achieve them in a specific timescale and tend toĀ stick them at the back of my mind with plenty of room for forgetting. Through my training programme, I’ve concluded thatĀ the optimalĀ way for me to stay focussed on a goal is to say when I would like to have achieved it and write it down in a placeĀ that will make itĀ a constant reminder to myself (I’ve found that sticky notes in my diary are useful for this). So, I’ve decided that each month I would like to set myself 5 goals… and try my best to achieve them. If at first attempt I don’t succeed, I will re-evaluate how I didn’t succeed and alter the goal to suit.


March Goals

1. Rise earlier in the morning.Ā I’m very guilty of being up all night and lying in some mornings. Whenever I have an early start, I feel so much more productive and energetic. Most mornings, I am awake for uni before 8 but if I have a late class then I’m not as disciplined. I’m aiming to be awake at 8am every morning in March. I will cut myself some slack on a Sunday (cause Sunday’s are lazy days right??).

2. Study for looming exams. We are almost finished the teaching period of semester 2 at university. My goal is to at least have summary notes written up for all of my classes and complete the recommended reading by the end of March. Achieveable I hope!

3. Eat healthy. The problem with studying is the amount of rubbish I eat when I do so. I have been reasonably good recently with my diet so I’m hoping to continue that through March and explore new recipes and snack ideas. If anyone has any good ideas let me know!

4. Declutter. March is the perfect opportunity for me to do some decluttering. I am making over my room this month so I will make time to clear out both my chests of drawers.

5. Socialise and get to know people more. I have just become secretary of my much adored dance club (yayyyyy!!) and I admittedlyĀ know the majority of people thereĀ really well… but I’m still SOOO bad with some people’s names. I hope to socialise more and find out more about everyone – this time cementing the forgotten names in my brain!!

I know, it’s mid way through February but I have some catching up I’d like to do… and January was a super busy month!

At the start of every new year, I NEED to have a diary. I really don’t understand academic diaries that run from August-July and I dislike them a lot. My criteria for the perfect diary is mostly that it must make me happy when I look at it and of course be A5 in size – I’m all about the practicality and tossing anything bigger than A5 in my handbag is not happening! I have had some of the weirdest diaries you would ever see but if it’s bright and colourful and I have a way of leaving my mark on it then it feels right to me. This time around, I opted for a pink marble effect, jotter style diary. In each of the pages it has uplifting quotes and motivation which I also think is somewhat cheesy but still cute.


“This Is My Year” and I am consciously trying my hardest to be the best I can with this “new start” in all aspects of life really. I want to be fit and eat healthy, I want to do well at university, I want to improve on my dancing (there’s a lot of work needing done but Newcastle has helped me on the way to that and I know where I am needing extra attention most of the time which is good), I want to be super organised and I want to develop my understanding of people more and be the best person I can possibly be. This is just a small chunk of my list (which by the way, is super long… I won’t bore you) but here, writing this in February I am keeping up with most of the list with the biggest blip being in the healthy eating part… weekends are pretty much off limits but I can forgive myself if I’m good throughout the week, right?

The Events

To bring in 2017 and let go of 2016, I was invited by a lovely dancing friend to her Hogmanay flat party. This was a brilliant night, spent with lovely people and I wouldn’t have wanted to welcome 2017Ā any other way.

Following this, my first trip of the year was to Edinburgh with Alistair. We stayed in an apartment just off the Royal Mile, it was authentic with brick walls and a fireplace inside and super cosy. The room even had lovely purple thistles inside!! Edinburgh is beautiful in so many ways but I will always love Glasgow the most.


Whilst in Edinburgh we went to Real Mary King’s Close. Real Mary King’s Close is an underground tour of series of closes below the City Chambers on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, dating back to the 1600s with the last person leaving in the 1900s. We had a tour guide who was fantastic due to his enthusiasm, knowledge and stories. He really made the tour exciting. The tour lasted around an hour and it is something I would definitely recommend. Photography is not permitted.

January weekends were spent dancing. In February, there is a competition in which teams come from everywhere around the world to dance Scottish Country. I was in the Glasgow University ladies team and the Glasgow Youth demonstration and so a lot of rehearsing was necessary. I LOVED the rehearsing, even when it did ache my feet and I ended up with shin splints… it was worth it!! I also bonded a lot with my team and made some great friends within my dancing group whom I think are amazing!

Although, not particularly as busy as I thought initially when thinking of things to write in this post, January was very busy with normal things like university and life and recovering from the Christmas holidays. January was also the month in which I received my exam results from the December exams and I must say, I was pleased with myself.

January was fun.
